Timewarp Races

As a VFX artist, I've always enjoyed comparing different time warping tools. Over the years, I've tested everything from Flame to Kronos in Nuke, After Effects, and Twixtor. While Twixtor generally led the pack, followed closely by Kronos and Flame, the differences were often subtle.

To properly evaluate these tools, I developed a specific benchmark clip - a complex mechanical shot that pushes time warping technology to its limits. What makes this shot particularly challenging?

  • Complex overlapping motion with unpredictable trajectories

  • Machinery components with ambiguous boundaries and definitions

  • Minimal color differentiation between parts, offering little assistance in object segregation

  • Multiple layers of reflections and transparent materials that create additional complexity

This shot essentially represents a perfect storm of time warping challenges. For years, it remained my go-to test for pushing these tools to their absolute limits.

Despite years of technological advancement, no traditional solution could handle this shot satisfactorily. That is, until the arrival of AI-powered tools. The game-changing moment came with Twixtor's Version 8, specifically its DNN (Deep Neural Network) AI model. When I slowed the footage to 50% speed, it achieved something unprecedented - perfect frame interpolation throughout the entire sequence.

This breakthrough demonstrates how AI is revolutionizing even the most challenging aspects of visual effects work. What was once impossible has become not just possible, but remarkably straightforward with the right AI tools.

Clearly, we’re gonna need another clip.
